The Easiest Vegetables to Grow

As a new gardener it is easy to get overwhelmed. I don't want that for you. I want you to know exactly what you are doing, when to do it, and how to do it.

In order to fulfill that promise, we want to give you a list of easy to grow plants for your first garden.

But first, we want to suggest that you start with transplants/seedlings (starter plants) to plant your first garden. It is one less thing you have to learn and be concerned with. Growing from seed is completely possible, but to get you started, planting plants is the best way to go.

9 Plants to try first

Beans

Beans are a super easy and laid back veggie to grow. From green beans to runner beans, they grow the same. Even if your soil is not the best, beans will tough it out to give you a good production.

Beets

Not only are beets easy to grow, you can grow so many from so little, and plant up to 16 in one square foot!

Chard

It's versatile in dishes and it is the same in the garden. In the hot seasons and the cool, the chard grows big and beautiful.

Herbs

With the wide variety of herbs, you will be able to grow herbs year-round in most growing zones. There are some really hard to kill herbs like rosemary. Did you know they can grow into bushes? Great for landscaping...*wink *wink

Kale

Similar to chard, some kale varieties can grow in hot and cold temperatures. Growing in the winter is my favorite. Why? If it is growing when it frosts, the end product is less bitter kale. Who doesn't love that?!

Lettuce

Many varieties of lettuces exist, and lots of those are super easy to grow. Some are loose lettuce, some are head lettuce. You can harvest it when it is small or thin (remove the extra to make space) so they can grow larger into a head. Sooo many ways to grow lettuce.

Peas

Peas are so beautiful on a trellis (support for vining plants). The leaves are big and then there are the long pea pods. Peas require very little care, just like the bean.

Radish

These little cuties are one of the very few root vegetables that can be harvested within a month. They grow best in the spring, so put this on your list for a quick win.

Squash

One of the first plants I grew was squash and zucchini, a hot season plant. I barely did anything and it grew huge! So, it's safe to say this beautiful plant is easy to grow.

One thing to notice

A lot of the plants on this list have one thing in common; they can grow in the fall (or warm season in zones 7-8). Starting a garden in the fall is one of the best times to start a garden, especially as a beginner. I talk about it in this post.

Starting a garden can be easy. One way is to choose plants that are easy to grow so you can ease yourself into your gardening journey. But if you feel like you would like more help, you can (1) get the Garden Starter Kit that helps you get started on your garden journey or (2) book a consultation to get one-on-one guidance, direction, and a 3D garden design for your garden space.

Happy growing!
